Dear Mr. Orwell,
After a great consideration, the warning of the world turning like the world in 1984 can happen in our society because it has happened before in history and history can repeat itself. If people are desperate, they are willing to do anything. People can be desperate for money, happiness, etc. but in the end they are all the same. When people want something to a point where they can’t bare it they will use any means possible even betray their loved ones. Also all of the things mentioned in the novel seem so realistic. At anytime the government can control all technology and the information that people are getting are false information placed by the government.
There was a time in history where a party had convinced their people that they were a better race and above the rest. During World War II, Hitler was so close in to changing the world like 1984. The two are similar because they used ways to brainwash their people. The Party in 1984 used telescreens to show the people what the government wanted them to see and know. With Hitler he had set up speakers on every street and corner that gave the people information and constantly reminded the people that Hitler was in charge. However, the United States was able to take Hitler down before he could do more damage. The fact that there was at least a moment like that tells the world that there are people think that way. So, it is likely that this can happen to our society today. History can always repeat itself when people aren’t careful enough.
Germany was desperately in need of help and was tired o being in a depression. When Hitler appears, Germany felt relieved and happy because he promised great accomplishments. The people of Germany did not care how they would rise to power, they just wanted to. Knowing this Hitler rook advantage, just like Winston betraying Julia because he was desperate to live. After being tortured by O’Brien, Winston was tired and weak; he was desperate. There are many undeveloped countries today that would do anything to gain power and wealth because they have been poor for such a long time. With one country convinced then the next country would be targeted and it would just keep going on until it takes over the world.
Everything that you mention and the technology that you created in your book seem likely to happen. If the government gained control of technology, there are so many things that they could do. For example, they could block all internet connects with the outside world, block television programs and started to post false information on the internet and spread propaganda. People would never know the truth of the outside world and they would slowly start to believe the propaganda being spread. The government could also start to eliminate words from existence to help control the people. People these days are so technology dependent that if the world had a sudden failure power source then the world would be in a great depression.
The warning is still valid because of all the possibilities and weaknesses of our society. Since there was a time in history that this has happen there is no stopping it from happening again. People every where are desperate and there is not much people can do. There are things that we can do to prevent this from happening. Children should be well educated and have a sense of option about their world. People can also tell stories of World War II and its many tragedies to help notify the world that it is capable of happening. Generation after generation should be taught to do things without technology. Instead of searching information about some one online, the person should go to the library or read a magazine. This would help people to understand that they can’t trust everything that are being written online.
Concerned Dearly,
SooJong S. Choe.
